The boat name: The original owners named the boat Emerald Star. The name fits the boat so well that the name has not been changed.
The website name: The sv stands for Sailing Vessel. On a marine radio sailboats identify themselves as sailing vessels. Power boats identify themselves as motor vessels. It's easier to identify a boat off in the distance if you know whether or not it has a mast. When it's written out on paper it would be in the format s/v Emerald Star. But the "/" doesn't work in a website name. So we've got svemeraldstar. We decided to use a .com name since it's easier for people to remember than a .org name. It is pretty common for cruising sailboats to have their websites named with the sv before their boatname.
Contacting us: If you want to contact us, email boatdogs@svemeraldstar.com. If you have questions, comments, suggestions, etc we may, or we may not, address them in the website. We'd like to hear what you think!
Updates: We have intermittent access to the internet. In other words, we may have it available for days at a time then go several days or weeks without it. So the only schedule for updates is there is no schedule. Here's a photo of one of the internet cafes we've used several times, the place with the blue tarp walls. Pretty high tech, isn't it?
Content:
Photos: All photos are strictly “G” rated. So you can surf this site without worrying about stumbling across an “inappropriate” photo that you, or somebody else, might not want to see.
This site does not contain detailed info regarding anything technical such as products, maintenance or repairs.
We try to avoid too much nautical terminology. This is so that you don't need to know how to sail in order to enjoy the site.
We also hope it may inspire and motivate people to chase their dreams. With lots of planning and preparation sometimes those thoughts of “I’d like to do whatever someday” can become “I did whatever”.

Questions.... not necessarily frequently asked.
Can you add more dog pictures? No problem!
Can you add more dates? We're trying, but geez, sometimes it's hard to keep track! Sometimes when we do a website update we don't have a calendar or any info on when we've been certain places. So we often are vague rather than just try to remember and maybe be wrong. But after all, does it really matter?
Why don't you do laundry on the boat? Because it uses a LOT of fresh water. It's cheaper, and easier, to use a laundramat or laundry service every month or so than to run the generator, make fresh water from the salt water, then hand wash the laundry. We don't wash clothes in the salt water because it takes a bunch of fresh water to remove the salt. Also, the salt corrodes all snaps, zippers, etc. If we are in the middle of nowhere we do it on the boat, but we're rarely in the middle of nowhere.
Changing a boat name: There are many superstitions related to changing a boat name. Many have to do with the gods Neptune and/or Poseidon. Books have been written about the proper ceremonies, procedures and rituals to go through to change the name while avoiding bad luck. Since Emerald Star is a perfectly nice name, we saw no reason to tempt fate and rename the boat.
